When India's second-largest petroleum refining and marketing company opens its doors for recruitment, it's not a notification you want to miss. Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) — a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise with annual gross sales of Rs. 4,76,411 crore — has released Advertisement No. HPCL/OPEN/HR/1/2026-27 inviting online applications for Officer-level posts covering both fresh Diploma engineers and seasoned professionals with experience ranging from 2 years to 24 years. Whether you're a Chemical Engineering Diploma holder just out of college, an MBA with two years of sales experience, or a senior professional with two decades in the petrochemicals industry — HPCL has a position that fits. The application window is open from 1 July 2026 (1600 hrs) to 20 July 2026 (1500 hrs) — just 19 days. This article walks you through everything you need to know before you fill that form.

About HPCL — Why This Is One of India's Most Coveted PSU Careers

Formed on July 15, 1974, HPCL is no ordinary PSU — it is one of India's energy cornerstones. The company recorded its highest-ever sales volume of 51.45 Million Metric Tonnes (MMT) in 2025-26, processed 26.04 million tonnes of crude at 106.3% refinery capacity utilisation, and achieved a standalone PAT of Rs. 17,175 crore — the highest in its history. HPCL operates refineries in Mumbai (9.5 MMTPA) and Visakhapatnam (15.0 MMTPA), a Lube Refinery at Mumbai, and holds equity stakes in HMEL (48.99%) and MRPL (16.96%). Its customer touchpoints include 25,131 retail outlets, 5,773 EV Charging Stations, 2,279 CNG facilities, and a customer base of 9.9 crore LPG consumers. With approximately 20.79% market share and the second-largest petroleum product pipeline network in India (5,440 km), joining HPCL means being part of a company that powers India's energy future. The HP Green R&D Centre in Bengaluru further positions HPCL at the forefront of innovation in energy transition and advanced materials.

Posts for Freshers: Junior Executive (Chemical & Fire Safety)

For fresh candidates, HPCL has notified 54 posts across two Junior Executive profiles. The Junior Executive — Chemical (37 posts) requires a 3-year full-time regular Diploma in Chemical Engineering (NTC) after 10th standard, and the candidate can be placed in Refinery or Marketing Division where they will operate and monitor complex plant equipment, manage process parameters, ensure safety compliance, and handle plant operations across shifts. The Junior Executive — Fire & Safety (17 posts) requires any Science Graduate plus a Diploma in Fire & Safety with a valid Heavy Vehicle Driving License — this role involves emergency response, firefighting operations, rescue missions including work in confined spaces using SCBA equipment, maintaining fire control rooms, operating fire vehicles, and participating in drills. Both posts carry a Pay Scale of Rs. 30,000–1,20,000 with an approximate CTC of Rs. 10.99 Lakh per annum. The maximum age for freshers is 25 years. Final year Diploma/Degree students passing out in Academic Year 2025-26 can also apply, subject to meeting eligibility criteria at the time of appointment. All qualifications must carry a minimum of 65% marks (aggregate) for UR/OBC-NCL/EWS and 55% for SC/ST/PwBD candidates — no rounding off applies (64.99% treated as less than 65%).

Posts for Experienced Professionals: From Senior Officer to Chief General Manager

The experienced professional category covers six distinct functional domains with multiple grade levels within each. Senior Officer — Sales (Retail/Lubes/Direct Sales/LPG) — 52 posts — is the largest recruitment in this category, requiring a 4-year B.E./B.Tech degree followed by a 2-year full-time MBA/PGDM, with minimum 2 years of post-MBA experience in Sales/Marketing in relevant sectors including Gas, Petroleum, Lubes, FMCG, Automobile, Petrochemical, Digital Marketing, or Food & Beverages. Pay scale is Rs. 60,000–1,80,000 with CTC of approximately Rs. 21.98 Lakh. Assistant Manager/Manager — Projects (5 posts total) requires 4-year Civil Engineering B.E./B.Tech with 6 to 9 years of experience in supervisory roles at Petroleum/Refining/Petrochemical/Infrastructure project sites, covering end-to-end project execution, safety management, and commissioning. For senior specialist roles, HPCL is hiring Chief Manager/DGM — Technical Services (Speciality Chemicals) requiring Chemical Engineering background and 15–18 years of experience in Polymer/Petrochemicals sales and marketing. The Economist profile (Senior Manager to DGM level) requires a 2-year full-time PG in Economics/Applied Economics/Energy Planning with 12–18 years of relevant experience in economic analysis, energy market modelling, and quantitative economic techniques. The Gas Sourcing & Marketing and Petrochemicals Sales & Marketing domains go up to GM and CGM levels, requiring 18 to 24 years of experience, with pay scales reaching Rs. 1,20,000–2,80,000 and CTC of approximately Rs. 49.73 Lakh per annum.

Service Bond and Retention Amount — Important Financial Commitment

HPCL requires selected candidates to execute a Service Bond for 3 years from the date of joining. For UR/General category candidates, the bond amount is Rs. 3,00,000/-, while for SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/PwBD candidates it is Rs. 50,000/-. Additionally, a Retention Amount of Rs. 5,000/- per month will be deducted from Junior Executive level pay during the 12-month probation period (Rs. 8,000/- per month for pay scales from Rs. 50,000 and above), which is released after 3 years without interest. Candidates planning to leave before the bond period must settle the full bond amount. This is an important financial consideration and candidates should factor this in before applying.

Selection Process — Multi-Stage Assessment

HPCL's selection process is multi-staged and position-specific. The first stage is a Computer Based Test (CBT), tentatively in August/September 2026, comprising two parts: General Aptitude (English, Quantitative Aptitude, Logical Reasoning, Data Interpretation) and Technical/Professional Knowledge based on the qualifying degree/discipline. Detailed syllabus will be available on the HPCL Careers Page — note that it is indicative and not exhaustive, and questions from allied domains of the qualifying degree may also appear. Post-CBT, shortlisted candidates (merit-cum-category-cum-discipline basis) will be required to upload supporting documents. Depending on position requirements, candidates may then be called for a Psychometric Assessment, followed by a Group Task and/or Personal Interview after document verification. For certain posts, a Physical Fitness Efficiency Test (PFET) — comprising Working at Height Test, Endurance Test, and Agility Test — will be conducted post the Pre-Employment Medical Examination (PEME). The final merit list is prepared on the basis of CBT + Group Task + Personal Interview + Work Experience (wherever applicable) — all stages are category and discipline-wise. Minimum qualifying marks must be secured at each stage to advance further. HPCL analyses candidate response patterns to detect unfair means, and any candidate found with non-genuine scores will have their candidature cancelled without notice.

Application Fee and Process

SC, ST, and PwBD candidates are fully exempted from the application fee. All other candidates — UR, OBC-NCL, and EWS — need to pay Rs. 1,000/- + GST @ 18% = Rs. 1,180/- (non-refundable), plus applicable payment gateway charges. Payment must be made online via Debit Card, Credit Card, UPI, or Net Banking only. Application once submitted with fee paid is treated as final — no changes will be entertained, and no refunds will be issued including in cases of duplicate or multiple payments. Applications with incomplete/wrong particulars or missing documents will not be considered, and candidature may be cancelled at any stage without notice if incorrect information is discovered.
