376 Scientific/Technical Assistant-A Posts — Selection Runs Entirely on Your GATE Score
The National Informatics Centre has opened direct recruitment for 376 Scientific/Technical Assistant-A posts across three disciplines — Computer Sciences & Information Technology, Electronics & Communication Engineering, and Data Science & Artificial Intelligence. What sets this recruitment apart from most government postings is that there's no written exam and no interview anywhere in the process — your GATE score from 2024, 2025, or 2026 is the entire basis for merit. If you already have a valid GATE score in the right paper code, this is one of the more direct routes into a central government technical post.
Salary
Scientific/Technical Assistant-A is classified as a Group-B (Scientific & Technical), Non-Gazetted post, placed at Level 6 of the 7th Central Pay Commission pay matrix. The pay scale runs from Rs. 35,400 to Rs. 1,12,400 per month, which is the standard Level 6 band applicable across central government technical postings of this grade. On top of the basic pay, selected candidates would be entitled to the usual central government allowances — Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, and Transport Allowance — as applicable to their place of posting, since the post carries an All India transfer liability and selected candidates may be posted anywhere in India or even outside India in the interest of the organization.
Your best score across three GATE years counts equally. NIC gives identical weightage to GATE 2024, GATE 2025, and GATE 2026 scores — so if your 2024 score was stronger than a more recent attempt, you can submit that one. There's no penalty for using an older valid score, and in a tie, the older GATE year actually gets ranked higher in the merit list.

GATE Paper Code Mapping
| GATE Test Paper | Paper Code |
|---|---|
| Computer Sciences and Information Technology | CS |
| Electronics and Communication Engineering | EC |
| Data Science and Artificial Intelligence | DA |
Candidates must hold a valid GATE score specifically in the paper code matching their chosen discipline — a strong score in a different GATE paper won't be accepted as equivalent.
How Ties in GATE Score Are Resolved
- First priority: the candidate with the older GATE year (e.g., a 2024 score beats an identical 2026 score) is ranked higher.
- Second priority: if the score and year are both identical, the older candidate (by age) is ranked higher.
- Third priority: if there's still a tie, the candidate with the higher percentage in their essential qualification is ranked higher. For CGPA-based results where the university doesn't provide a conversion formula, the candidate must submit a Registrar-issued certificate confirming the equivalent percentage.
Document Verification happens only in Delhi (or an approved alternate location) — with zero flexibility. NIC explicitly states there will be no postponement of the DV date, no change of location, and no TA/DA paid for attending. Candidates need to plan travel and logistics for this stage well in advance, since missing it outright disqualifies you regardless of your GATE rank.
Full Document Checklist for Document Verification
- Date of Birth proof — Birth Certificate (Municipality-issued) or Matriculation Certificate showing DOB
- Matriculation and Senior Secondary Examination Certificates/Marksheets
- GATE Score Card for the year being claimed (2024, 2025, or 2026)
- Essential Qualification marksheets showing date of result declaration
- Final Degree Certificate (or Provisional Pass Certificate if the final degree hasn't been issued yet)
- CGPA-to-percentage conversion certificate from the University Registrar, if your result is in CGPA and no standard formula exists
- No Objection Certificate (NOC) — mandatory for candidates currently working in Central/State Government, PSUs, Aided Institutions, or Autonomous Bodies, and it must confirm no pending or contemplated disciplinary/vigilance case
- Age relaxation certificate for in-service candidates, in the prescribed format, if applicable
- Ex-Serviceman certificate in the prescribed format, if applicable
- Category certificate — SC/ST (prescribed GoI format), OBC-NCL (Central List format, GoI-appointment format only — state-list or education-purpose OBC certificates are NOT accepted), EWS (based on FY 2025-26 income, valid for 2026-27), or PwBD (minimum 40% permanent disability, Government Medical Board issued)
- Gazette Notification, if the candidate has changed their name
- Aadhaar Card, for Aadhaar-based authentication used at every stage of this recruitment
- Any other Photo ID — PAN Card, Driving License, EPIC (Voter ID), or other government-issued ID
- One recent passport-size colour photograph, to be brought physically to Document Verification along with the downloaded Authorization Letter
Who Can Issue Your EWS Certificate
Only an Income & Asset Certificate issued by one of the following authorities will be accepted as valid EWS proof:
- District Magistrate / Additional District Magistrate / Collector / Deputy Commissioner / Additional Deputy Commissioner / 1st Class Stipendiary Magistrate / Sub-Divisional Magistrate / Taluka Magistrate / Executive Magistrate / Extra Assistant Commissioner
- Chief Presidency Magistrate / Additional Chief Presidency Magistrate / Presidency Magistrate
- Revenue Officer not below the rank of Tehsildar
- Sub-Divisional Officer of the area where the candidate and/or their family normally resides
Citizenship Requirements
A candidate must be one of the following: a citizen of India; a subject of Nepal; a subject of Bhutan; a Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1 January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling; or a person of Indian origin who migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, or the East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania (formerly Tanganyika and Zanzibar), Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India. Candidates in the latter four categories must hold a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India.
A Few More Rules Worth Knowing
- Qualifications obtained through Open Universities or Distance Education mode are accepted, but only if approved by the Distance Education Council and, where applicable, AICTE, as per Gazette Notification No. 44 dated 1 March 1995.
- No claim of an "equivalent" qualification to what's listed in the eligibility table will be entertained — your degree must match the specified fields directly.
- Merely satisfying the eligibility criteria mentioned in the notification does not automatically qualify a candidate for appointment.
- The application fee, once paid, is non-refundable under any circumstances, including incomplete transactions — candidates are responsible for confirming their payment went through successfully.
- Any dispute arising from this recruitment falls under the jurisdiction of courts in Delhi.
- NIC will not respond to queries seeking advice on eligibility or posting location.
The most important practical takeaway here: since there's no exam to prepare for, your entire chance rests on a GATE score you may have already earned. If you have a valid 2024, 2025, or 2026 score in the CS, EC, or DA paper, the real work in this recruitment is administrative — getting your documents, category certificates, and NOC (if applicable) in order well before the closing date, since nothing about your GATE performance can be improved once the application window shuts.
