Four Nursing Entrance Exams, One Application Window: ANM, GNM & B.Sc Nursing 2026
Jharkhand's nursing education pipeline gets its annual refresh this July, with the JCECEB opening applications for four courses at once — ANM, GNM, and both streams of B.Sc Nursing. Each has its own exam date, its own fee slab, and its own marks distribution, which makes it easy to mix them up if you're applying to more than one. Here's how the four actually compare, side by side.
Exam Pattern: Subject-Wise Marks Across All Four Courses
The subject weightage shifts quite a bit depending on the course — GNM and B.Sc Nursing lean heavily on core science subjects, while ANM keeps things broader with general science and general knowledge.
| Course | Subject-Wise Break-up | Total Marks |
|---|---|---|
| ANM | General Science – 50, General Knowledge – 25, Mathematics – 25 | 100 |
| GNM | English – 30, Physics – 30, Chemistry – 30, Biology – 30, Mathematics – 30 (all at Matric level) | 150 |
| B.Sc Nursing (Basic) | Chemistry – 50, Physics – 50, Biology – 50 (at Intermediate/10+2 level) | 150 |
| B.Sc Nursing (Post-Basic) | Based entirely on the Grade-A Nursing curriculum | 100 |
All papers are objective-type (MCQ).
How Ties in Merit Are Resolved
When two or more candidates land on the same total score, the Board doesn't leave it to chance — each course has its own fixed order of subjects to break the tie, before falling back on age and then alphabetical order.
| Course | Tie-Breaking Order (in sequence) |
|---|---|
| ANM | Higher marks in Science → General Knowledge → Mathematics → Older age → Alphabetical order |
| GNM | Biology → Chemistry → Physics → English → Older age → Alphabetical order |
| B.Sc Nursing (Basic) | Biology → Chemistry → Older age |
| B.Sc Nursing (Post-Basic) | Older age → Alphabetical order of first name |
Applying to more than one course? Candidates appearing for both ANM and GNM should pick the same exam centre city while filling both forms, so the Board can try to place both exams in the same school — saving you a second trip across town on exam day.
A Closer Look at B.Sc Nursing (Post-Basic)
This stream works a little differently from the other three, since it's built for candidates who are already GNM-qualified and registered nurses rather than fresh 10+2 pass-outs. Selection here follows a clear pecking order — regular Grade-A government nurses get first preference, followed by those on contract with the Jharkhand government, and finally Grade-A nurses working in non-government institutions.
There's also a service condition worth flagging: government-employed nurses who complete this course are bound to serve five years in a state government institution afterward. Stepping away from that commitment early means repaying the salary drawn during training along with the training cost itself — so it's a decision worth thinking through before applying.
Across all four courses, the process stays fully online from application to admit card, and reservation benefits for EWS, BC-I, BC-II, SC, ST, and PwBD candidates follow the Jharkhand government's prevailing reservation policy. Since institution-wise and category-wise seat matrices are published separately on the JCECEB website, it's worth checking those before finalising which centre and course to apply for.
