Every year, lakhs of graduates across India compete for one dream — a Probationary Officer seat in a Public Sector Bank. This year, IBPS has made that dream significantly more accessible. The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection has officially released CRP PO/MT-XVI notification on 30 June 2026, announcing 6,715 vacancies — a remarkable 29% increase over last year — across 11 participating Public Sector Banks for the financial year 2027-28. With Bank of Baroda alone offering 1,900 posts and Canara Bank contributing 1,500 more, this is one of the largest IBPS PO recruitment cycles in recent years. The application window is open from 1 July to 21 July 2026 — just 21 days — so every day counts. Before you start filling the form, read this complete breakdown carefully, because a single mistake in your application after submission could cost you this opportunity permanently.

What is IBPS CRP PO/MT-XVI?

IBPS conducts the Common Recruitment Process for Probationary Officers once every year on behalf of India's participating public sector banks. CRP PO/MT-XVI is the 16th edition of this process, recruiting candidates for Probationary Officer and Management Trainee posts for vacancies arising in the financial year 2027-28. Candidates who clear all stages are provisionally allotted to one of the 11 participating banks — Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra, Canara Bank, Central Bank of India, Indian Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, Punjab National Bank, Punjab & Sind Bank, UCO Bank, and Union Bank of India. Notably, three banks (Indian Bank, UCO Bank, and Union Bank of India) have not yet reported their vacancy figures, which means the actual total may increase further. The allotment is merit-cum-preference based, and once provisional allotment is made, it is final and binding — no changes are entertained under any circumstances.

Eligibility: Simpler Than Most Government Jobs

The educational qualification for IBPS PO is straightforward and one of its most attractive features — any graduate in any discipline from a recognized university is eligible, as long as the final result was declared on or before 21 July 2026. Whether you hold a B.A., B.Com., B.Sc., B.Tech., BCA, or any other graduation degree, you qualify. Age limit is 20 to 30 years as on 01 July 2026, meaning candidates born between 02 July 1996 and 01 July 2006 are eligible. SC/ST candidates get 5-year relaxation (up to 35), OBC-NCL candidates get 3-year relaxation (up to 33), PwBD candidates get 10-year relaxation (up to 40), and Ex-Servicemen get 5-year relaxation subject to government guidelines. OBC candidates must ensure their Non-Creamy Layer certificate is dated on or after 01 April 2026 — any older certificate will be rejected at the interview stage.

Salary & Career Growth: Why IBPS PO Remains India's Most Coveted Banking Exam

A freshly joined IBPS PO draws a starting basic pay of Rs. 48,480 per month, with a structured increment scale that takes the basic up to Rs. 85,920 over the course of the career. But the real value lies in the in-hand salary — when Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, City Compensatory Allowance, and other perquisites are added, the total in-hand salary ranges from approximately Rs. 74,000 to Rs. 76,000 per month depending on the posting city. On top of this, IBPS POs are entitled to NPS pension contributions, medical benefits for self and family, leave encashment, performance-linked increments, and bank-specific perks such as concessional loans and staff benefits. Importantly, POs are fast-tracked for promotion to Scale-II and above through internal exams, making this a career with significant upward mobility — not just a starting job.

What's New in IBPS PO 2026 — The Revised Mains Exam Pattern

This year brings a significant change that every serious aspirant must note: the IBPS PO Main Examination pattern has been revised. The objective section now has 170 questions for 200 marks, an increase from the previous 145 questions. The four sections are Reasoning (40Q/60M/45 min), General/Economy/Banking Awareness (50Q/60M/35 min), English Language (40Q/20M/35 min), and Data Analysis & Interpretation (40Q/60M/45 min). A Descriptive Paper of 2 questions and 25 marks (30 min) covering Essay and Comprehension in English continues as before and may be evaluated by an automated scoring mechanism. Additionally, a Personality Test — a self-report assessment — has been introduced as a mandatory non-qualifying stage between the Main Exam and Interview. Candidates who clear the Main Exam must appear for the Personality Test to be eligible for the Interview. There is also a new requirement: UDID card authentication for PwBD candidates during registration. Candidates should plan their preparation accordingly and not base their strategy on older exam pattern resources.

Selection Process: Four Stages to Your Bank Officer Career

Stage one is the Online Preliminary Examination — 100 questions across English Language (30Q/30M/20 min), Quantitative Aptitude (35Q/30M/20 min), and Reasoning Ability (35Q/40M/20 min), each section separately timed, totaling 100 marks in 60 minutes. This is qualifying in nature only — marks do not count in the final merit. Stage two is the Online Main Examination, whose marks form the basis of final merit. The objective section is 170 questions for 200 marks (160 minutes), and a Descriptive Paper of 2 questions for 25 marks (30 minutes) is also part of this stage. Stage three is the Personality Test — mandatory but non-scoring, to be completed by all Main Exam qualifiers. Stage four is the Common Interview — 100 marks with a minimum qualifying mark of 40% (35% for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD). The final merit is 80% Main Exam + 20% Interview. Throughout all stages, a negative marking of 0.25 marks applies for every wrong answer in the objective sections — unattempted questions carry no penalty.

Application Fee: Pay the Right Amount for Your Category

SC, ST, and PwBD candidates pay a reduced fee of Rs. 175/- (inclusive of GST), while all other candidates — General, OBC, and EWS — pay Rs. 850/- (inclusive of GST). Payment is accepted online only through Debit Card, Credit Card, Net Banking, IMPS, UPI, or Mobile Wallets. Bank transaction charges are borne by the candidate. If you use the Edit Window after the closing date to correct your application, an additional flat correction fee of Rs. 200/- applies regardless of category. Once paid, neither the application fee nor the correction fee is refundable under any circumstances.

Pre-Examination Training: A Free Edge for Reserved Category Candidates

IBPS offers free Pre-Examination Training (PET) in Online Mode for a limited number of candidates from SC, ST, OBC, and Minority Communities. This is a valuable resource that many eligible candidates overlook. If you belong to any of these categories, make sure to opt for PET by selecting the relevant column in your online application form — it doesn't guarantee selection, but it provides structured exam preparation at no cost.
